Multi-objective optimization of geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported embankments

Abstract The design of geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported (GRPS) embankments is traditionally optimized by searching for the most cost-effective solution among several workable candidates. candidates are usually based on experiences engineers, real optimal could be therefore missed. This paper intends to address above-mentioned issue systematically optimizing GRPS considering simultaneously cost safety in entire space. It thus a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem that differs from studies only focusing minimizing construction cost. A practical MOO procedure proposed this paper, it applied an illustrative embankment case. set nondominated designs (Pareto front) obtained at first, allowing informed decision. Then, four located Pareto front highlighted. Each them represents attractive design: safest, least-cost, best trade-off (knee point) two objectives, cheapest one target requirement. Finally, can selected these depending specific project purposes. For case study, knee point leads improvements both defined objectives (i.e., decreased increased safety) compared initial design, showing great benefits performing analysis. By using procedure, also efficiently determined cases different heights.
